State veggie: It's collards for the win

May 26, 2011

Workers brave the cold as they harvested collards as the snow fell on an early morning in December 2010 near Gilbert in Lexington County.

It's a win for collards.

S.C. House members voted 86-14 Thursday to make collard greens the state's official vegetable.

The bill, introduced by state Sen. Jake Knotts, R-Lexington, sparked debate among lawmakers about whether the proposal was a waste of legislative time.

The bill now heads to Gov. Nikki Haley's desk for her signature or veto.
