After abandoning Columbia, Confederate Gen. P.G.T. Beauregard, the commander of Southern forces that had fired on Sumter four years earlier, briefly sets up his headquarters in the Century House in Ridgeway.

Later that month, Union forces burn parts of Ridgeway, sack Winnsboro and occupy Georgetown.
