Civil War moments in S.C. -- April 9, 1865

August 1, 2011

Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee surrenders the Army of Northern Virginia to Union Gen. Ulysses Grant at Appomattox Court House, Va.

That same day, a Union army led by Gen. Edward Potters – which had launched a raid from Georgetown to Manning to Sumter on its way to Camden – meets and defeats a small Confederate force at the Battle of Dingle’s Mill in Sumter County.

The Union raid frees 5,000 slaves.
