Gen. George Stonemans Union cavalry raids Greenville as he pursues Confederate President Jefferson Davis, who has fled the now-captured Richmond with visions of re-establishing Confederate operations west of the Mississippi River.
Stonemans cavalry already has taken Spartanburg and goes on to raid Anderson.
That same day, Davis holds the last Confederate cabinet meeting in Abbeville. (Others say the last cabinet meeting was held three days later in Washington, Ga.) A week later, Davis is captured in Irwinville, Ga.
