Woman attacked at grocery store, arrest made

August 10, 2011

A 64-year-old woman was hospitalized Saturday after a volunteer helper at a grocery store struck her in the head with a can of pineapples.

Whitney Deandra Wilson, 21, of Forest Grove Lane, Columbia, has been charged with strong arm robbery and first-degree assault in the attacks, said Maj. George Brothers of the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department.

Linda Sarvis Canaday, 64, of Columbia was shopping at 3:30 p.m. at the Food Lion on St. Andrews Road when a woman offered to help her shop, bag and load her groceries. At the car, Canady got in the driver’s seat to turn on the air conditioning.

The suspect grabbed the can from a bag and hit Canady in the forehead. She then stole Canady’s wallet and ran toward a nearby apartment complex, the sheriff’s department said. The wallet had $300 inside, Brothers said.
