The University of South Carolina’s student newspaper reported Thursday night that that USC administration had stopped all fraternity rush activities in the wake of “widespread alcohol issues.”
Jerry Brewer, USC’s longtime associate vice president of Student Affairs, tells the Daily Gamecock the move is unprecedented.
The move came on Thursday, the first day of class on the Columbia campus. Fraternities were preparing to offer bids to potential new members, according to the publication.

A third of fraternities had been documented for alleged violations during rush week, Brewer said.
“I don’t know what comes next,” Brewer is quoted as saying. The president of one fraternity called the move unfortunate.
Sorority rush activities are reportedly not affected by the USC move.
