Council bans bath salts, synthetic marijuana

Columbia City Council Tuesday made it illegal to have or sell bath salts and synthetic marijuana in the city limits.

Without any debate, a majority of council gave second and final approval to a new law that bans the products, which critics say are being abused.

A growing number of local governments have prohibited the products — that are legal under state law — or are considering bans. Lexington County became the latest, giving initial approval Tuesday to a ban.

The marijuana product, known as K2 or spice, is sold as “herbal potpourri. Bath salts are being smoked, snorted or injected.

Both products come with warnings that they are not for human consumption.
