Two care homes in Columbia serving a dozen clients who are mentally ill are being forced to close because of state budget cuts, the Mental Illness Recovery Center announced Tuesday.

MIRCI built and opened the facilities on state property in 2007. The nonprofit agency now has until Aug. 1 to close the homes and relocate the clients, based on an agreement just reached with the S.C. Department of Mental Health.

“This means we now don’t serve people who otherwise are in hospitals,” MIRCI director Julie Ann Avin said.

Avin said she’s working on a plan for the two, six-bed homes on the grounds of the old Craft Farrow hospital in Northeast Richland.
