It’s a “mystery” why a 20-year-old Irmo man was walking in the westbound lane of I-26 just outside Columbia when he was struck and killed by four cars over the weekend, said an S.C. Highway Patrol trooper.

“We don’t know that,” said Cpl. Judd Jones.

The man has been identified as Casey Spence Rogers, 20, of Irmo, Lexington County Coroner Harry Harman said. Rogers died of massive body trauma.

The coroner’s office has ordered toxicology tests on Rogers, which may help determine whether drugs or alcohol were involved, said Chief Deputy Coroner Randy Martin.

The accident happened about an hour before dawn Saturday, around 6:15 a.m., just west of the off-ramp near the St. Andrews Road exit at mile marker 106, Jones said.

Jones did not know which lane Rogers was walking in, or whether he was walking across I-26, with traffic or against it.

Rogers was first struck by a 2006 Volkswagen driven by Robert Johnson, 67, of West Columbia, then by three other vehicles in succession — a 2007 Toyota, a 2005 Nissan and a 1997 Saturn, Jones said. No charges have been filed against any of the drivers.

Rogers worked for Heads Up Irrigation, a lawn-sprinkler company, but left his job there earlier in the year, his former employer said. No other information was available about him.

The coroner’s office and the Highway Patrol are investigating.
