One day after the shooting, the dog's partner, Master Deputy Warren Cavanagh, was named "Deputy of the Year" by the Richland County Sheriff's Department. The decision was made two weeks ago.
McCreary appeared before Richland County Magistrate Michelle Branch-Howard at 9:30 a.m. Saturday. He is charged with unlawful killing of a police dog, five counts of attempted murder and two counts of armed robbery and remains in custody at the detention center.
McCreary was arrested Friday morning after, police say, he robbed and shot at employees of a community market in a North Columbia neighborhood and evaded police for more than eight hours.
Deputies say McCreary then fired on officers and shot and killed Fargo, one of the dogs assigned to the Richland County Sheriffs Departments K-9 unit.
Sheriff Leon Lott said there will be a memorial service in honor of Fargo this week.
Lott said Cavanagh got a standing ovation Saturday from his fellow officers at the awards ceremony honoring him. He said "God works in mysterious ways" as he announced the winner.
Cavanagh has been a Richland County deputy for five years and worked with police dogs since 2004.
