Airport may not be listed in the Class 3A Top 20 rankings by scmat.com yet, but the Eagles certainly had a memorable first month of the season. Ray Grigsby’s team went 14-0 in dual matters and secured two tournament championships along the way – the Blazer Invitational at Ridge View on Dec. 17 and the Eagle Invitational at home on Dec. 29.

Six Eagles claimed individual gold medals at the Ridge View event - Austin Watters, Malick Mack , Rashad McRea, Nick Wilson , Stephen Skrockie, and Richard Davis. Otherwise, Greg Alvoreze, Ross Quigley, and Kashawn King came away with silver medals and Dalton Sturkie and Jose Alvorez netted bronze awards for consolation titles.

A.C Flora’s lack of depth has resulted in a 1-11 dual meet record, but sophomore Christian Washington, senior Josh Furr and junior Donato Pelzer have all done well individually. Washington is 10-3 at 170 pounds, Furr is 7-3 at 195 and Pelzer is 6-2 at 220.

Chapin entered the new season under a new coach (former Dutch Fork and Spring Valley boss Ken Wilson) and ranked No. 1 by scmat.com. The Eagles have gone 16-6 is duals and slipped to the No. 2 spot in the poll behind St. James.

“We had a good December, and the team is coming together with the seniors performing well and leading the younger kids,” said Wilson.

Scott Swindell, a state champion at 152 last year is ranked No. 1 at 160, and veteran teammates Chase Owens (2nd, 152), Devin Lawrence (2nd, 171), Cody Brundage (4th, 182), Brandon Owens (2nd, 220) and Adam Taylor (4th, 285) have top five individual rankings.
