Daily Show: DeMint scared of political storm in SC too + video

January 12, 2012

A big storm is coming to South Carolina -- and Comedy Central handled the weather coverage.

“The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” last night treated the incoming GOP presidential campaign like a hurricane hitting South Carolina.

Correspondent Aasif Mandvi, wearing a safari vest, stood front in a picture of the Statehouse in Columbia: “The flood of negatively is predicted to reach at least chest high.”

Asked by Stewart what residents should do, he said: “They should head for the high moral ground … and stay away from radio and TV.” Correspondent Jason Jones was “in” Myrtle Beach wearing a rain coat.

“The outer edge of campaign struck around 6 this morning and we have been slammed with robo-calls and character attack ads. … We’re seeing conditions we have never seen before. Just this morning I witnessed abusive skywriting at a Romney event.”

(Watch the video to see the joke but the word next to the front-runner kind of rhymes with “deuce.”)

Soon after, U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint, a Republican who has not endorsed a candidate in the 2012 primary, came out as Stewart’s guest. “I think I’m afraid to go home to South Carolina now after I’ve seen the reports,” DeMint said after he was introduced.

Stewart’s asked why primaries go from “Field of Dreams” to “The Shining” when candidates come to South Carolina.

DeMint said candidates get desperate to keep their chances alive in “a rough and tangled political state” where the senator wondered how he survived campaigns.

“I’m going to stay in New York a couple of days just to...” DeMint said.

Stewart cut him off: “I think you should ... where people are kind.”

DeMint started to laugh and replied, “There are no commercials.”
