Smoke is from fires in controlled burn at Fort Jackson

Columbia residents who saw thick plumes of smoke in the sky Sunday around the Percival Road area of Fort Jackson didn’t need to worry.

The smoke came from a controlled burn on the fort, Columbia Fire Chief Aubrey Jenkins said.

Much of the 52,000-acre U.S. Army base is woods and forest, and the Army periodically burns wooded areas to control growth and reduce the chances of forest fires.
