A 40-year-old Batesburg-Leesville man faces charges related to cutting down timber on private property without paying the landowner. According to the South Carolina Forestry Commission, Eric C. Dyer negotiated a contract with the Lexington County landowner but failed to pay for the timber, valued at $2,025. Dyer is out on bond pending a trial and taking steps to pay the landowner, commission spokesman Scott Hawkins said in a statement. In releasing details of the case, Hawkins said many landowners don’t realize the value of the timber on their land. He suggested such landowners get professional advice before selling, a service provided by Registered Consulting Foresters in South Carolina. The timber industry in the state is valued around $17 billion annually, Hawkins said. Some 13 million acres of South Carolina forests are privately owned.
