South Carolina Democrats will formally select Barack Obama as their presidential candidate on Saturday at dozens of “firehouse caucuses” across the state.

The meetings, known as “precinct reorganizations,” are also the first step toward becoming a national delegate to September’s Democratic National Convention in Charlotte.

Precincts will elect delegates to the county conventions, who will elect delegates to the state convention, who will elect delegates to the national convention.
