High school students across the state are being asked to sign pledge cards promising not to send text messages while driving.

The S.C. Department of Public Safety has teamed with Subway restaurants in the ‘W8 2TXT’ campaign. Dutch Fork High School hosted one of the five kickoff events on Friday. Subway is distributing wristbands as a reminder and donating subs to the school that wins a pledge contest.

Car crashes are the leading cause of death for young people in South Carolina, the public safety department reported. In 2011, 165 drivers ages 15 to 24 were killed on S.C. roads. Law enforcement officials say that distracted driving is a leading cause of those wrecks.

A Virginia Tech Transportation Institute study recently found that drivers who send text messages are 23 times more likely to crash.
