BEAUFORT — Panel wants ban to continue on traffic cameras
A state commission recommends South Carolina continue its ban on the use of cameras to catch speeders.
The Beaufort Gazette reported the S.C. Traffic Enforcement Commission filed its report earlier this month.
The panel was created after lawmakers banned the use of cameras like those Ridgeland police used on Interstate 95. The law bans using cameras to issue tickets based on photographic evidence to enforce speeding laws.
The commission says only the Public Safety Department should ever be allowed to use traffic cameras. The commission says the state doesn’t have enough judges to handle all the cases if local governments used traffic cameras.
Ridgeland was the first town to use traffic cameras when it deployed them in August 2010 to ticket speeders on I-95.
