A man died in Calhoun County after he was struck by a car while trying to catch his dog on Interstate 26 Sunday night.

Calhoun County Coroner Donnie Porth said that Herman Rummell, 68, of Pine Bush, N.Y., was struck by a 2010 Toyota Camry. He suffered multiple trauma, and was dead when authorities arrived.

Porth said that Rummell and his wife were traveling to Tampa, Fla. and stopped at a rest stop near the interstate’s 121st mile marker to let their dogs out. One of the dogs slipped out of its leash and ran out onto the interstate. Rummell was trying to catch him when he was hit by the car, Porth said.

The unidentified Camry driver, 26, was transported to Lexington Medical Center, where she was treated for minor injuries.

The dog survived the accident by running back to its owner's RV, said Senior Trooper Brent Kelly.
