RICHLAND 1: A team of students from W.A. Perry Middle School earned second place in the South Carolina Regional Future City competition, held Jan. 21 at the University of South Carolina-Aiken. The team – Michael Bannister, Jarquis Pope and Justin Simmons (with Robert Hutto, alternate) – designed the future city, Hydro-Utopia, which used water and wind for energy sources. They also won the gold medal for “Best Energy System.” Another team of Perry students – Gabriella Myers, Tiyona Felder and Amariyah Ayee – won a silver medal in the category of “Protecting Public Health and Safety Through Competent and Ethical Engineering” for their city, Silver City. A third team – Lanishia Boyd, Tyjon Adgerson and Totiana Bostick – also made a great showing with their future city, Windy Falls. Debra Evans, aerospace teacher at W.A. Perry, and volunteer mentor Tom Kohlsaat spent many hours in the evenings and weekends working with the teams. The Future City Competition is produced and judged by South Carolina engineers to promote careers in engineering. RICHLAND 1/USED WITH PERMISSION
