The State Budget and Control Board agreed Tuesday to pay a combined $609,500 to three former Department of Corrections employees in order to settle lawsuits.

The three employees, who all worked at the Lee Correctional Institution, alleged the state Department of Corrections fired them or forced them to retire over allegations of lax boiler room security at the Bishopville prison.

Taxpayers will pay Calvin Anthony, the warden at the time, $342,500. Former associate Warden Henry Pridgen will get $225,000, and former maintenance chief Thomas Morrow will be paid $42,000.

South Carolina’s insurance reserve fund will pay $50,000 toward the settlements. The Department of Corrections will have to pay the rest, using money from its operating budget.
