ATHENS, Ga. — 3 Georgia freshmen dismissed for rules violations
Three freshmen Georgia football players this season have been dismissed from the team by coach Mark Richt for undisclosed violations.
Richt would not disclose what team rules were broken, saying only that “mistakes were made and part of our job is helping them learn from mistakes.” The three are cornerback Nick Marshall, defensive back Chris Sanders and receiver Sanford Seay.

Ohio State defends Meyer
Ohio State athletics director Gene Smith jumped to the defense of new coach Urban Meyer, who has been accused of poaching recruits who had committed to other Big Ten programs.
Meyer’s first recruiting class on included eight players who initially had said they were attending another school, including four who originally said they were going to Penn State and one each who had declared they would go to Michigan State and Wisconsin.
Coaches from Michigan State and Wisconsin have publicly questioned the Buckeyes’ recruiting practices.

Tennessee coach Derek Dooley has hired Derrick Ansley to coach the Volunteers’ cornerbacks. …Iowa offensive coordinator Ken O’Keefe has resigned after 13 seasons, leaving the Hawkeyes for another coaching position.
State coaching
Presbyterian has hired former Coastal Carolina assistant Drew Watson as defensive coordinator. … Furman has hired Jimmy Lindsey as defensive line coach.
