West Virginia scores again

It was “bash Clemson day” at the State House Tuesday.

It started in the morning at the State Budget and Control Board when an item came up about Clemson University leasing one of its buildings. That’s when state Comptroller General Richard Eckstrom looked at Gov. Nikki Haley, a Clemson graduate, and said:

“I received a call from Goodwill. They said they can’t take any more Clemson T-shirts.”

Things got worse later in the House Democratic caucus meeting.

Two Clemson trustees — Louis Lynn and former Lt. Gov. Bob Peeler — introduced themselves and announced they were seeking re-election. Lynn was careful to point out that he “was not in charge of football,” and Peeler wanted to put an end “to the rumor that West Virginia just scored again.”

Buzz expects these jabs at Clemson will continue this week, when the USC baseball team will be honored at the State House for its back-to-back College World Series championships.

Trial by fire for DMV employees

New state Department of Motor Vehicles director Kevin Shwedo – a 32-year Army man – has no mercy on his new employees.

Speaking to a state Senate committee Wednesday, Shwedo said one of the biggest problems he has found is dealing with irate customers.

“I get big ugly guys with hairy chests over there to throttle (workers) in the new-employee training so they can learn to defuse the situation and go ahead and provide the courtesy we believe every one of our citizens deserve,” he said.

Maybe Shwedo should take over orientation for new lawmakers?
