A woman died in a house fire early Wednesday morning.

Columbia-Richland County fire crews responded to a fire on the 2100 block of Morninglo Lane before 1:30 a.m., fire department spokesman Brick Lewis said.

County Coroner Gary Watts confirmed that a woman’s body was found in the home. He said that after an autopsy, his office determined that she died from smoke inhalation and carbon monoxide poisoning. The woman was the only person in the home at the time of the fire. The fire does not appear suspicious in nature, but its cause is under investigation, Lewis said.

The fire was largely contained to a living room in the one-story brick home. It caused an estimated $26,000 in damages.

The Richland County Fire Marshall’s Office is handling the investigation.
