Sewage leaked from a damaged manhole for an undetermined time into a tributary of Six Mile Creek near Columbia Metropolitan Airport, Cayce officials said Wednesday.

The manhole in a wooded area had been damaged, possibly during clearing of power line rights-of-way near John Hardee Expressway and Mobile Avenue, according to Frank Robinson, director of utilities for Cayce, which serves the area. The leak was stopped within 90 minutes of being reported, but it is unclear when the damage first occurred.

People should avoid contact with the water in the small creeks running through the neighborhoods between the airport and Interstate 26, authorities said. Six Mile Creek eventually merges with Congaree Creek and runs into the Congaree River, but it is unlikely the pollutants flowed in any concentration that far.
