Police blanketed the Shandon neighborhood in downtown Columbia at lunchtime, looking for a fleeing drug suspect.

More than a dozen heavily armed Columbia police and Richland County deputies scoured the area around Woodrow and Heyward streets around 1 p.m.

They also were searching Shandon lawns, sidewalks and brush piles for a weapon they believe was tossed out a car window by the suspect.

The suspect reportedly also tossed what could have been drugs out his window at another location.

Traffic was blocked for some time, but has resumed. Woodrow is a popular cut-through street for lunchgoers headed to Five Points or Rosewood Drive.
