FOUNTAIN INN — A bat flew through an Upstate classroom today, sending children scrambling and a school janitor searching for the winged mammal.

The bat apparently escaped from a cordoned off area of Fountain Inn Elementary School where exterminators were trying to get rid of a number of bats, said Adam Myrick, a spokesman for the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control.

“Everybody hit the deck, then left the room,’’ Myrick said. “A maintenance guy came in and was able to safely get it.’’

No one was bitten by the bat, which tested negative for rabies, Myrick said.
