FORT WORTH, Texas — Texas Christian University football players told undercover officers that drug use was widespread among the team, according to affidavits released Wednesday after the arrest of 18 people, including four players, on drug charges.

The details disclosed in their arrest warrant affidavits are a blow to one of the most respected programs in college football and one expected to contend for the Big 12 title in its first season in the league. Spring practice begins Feb. 25.

Police say that four players — linebacker Tanner Brock, defensive lineman D.J. Yendrey, offensive tackle Ty Horn and cornerback Devin Johnson — sold marijuana to students and football players. They have been kicked off the team.

  • Clemson coaches’ raises revealed

Clemson and head football coach Dabo Swinney rewarded several football assistants with raises totaling $450,000.

The compensation committee of the Clemson board of trustees approved the proposal of athletics director Terry Don Phillips on Wednesday.

More than 60 percent of the raises will go to Swinney.

The increased salaries will last for two seasons.

Co-defensive coordinator Charlie Harbison and defensive ends Marion Hobby will earn $375,000. Defensive line coach Dan Brooks, tight ends coach Danny Pearman and offensive line coach Robbie Caldwell will make $310,000. Recievers coach Jeff Scott will earn $215,000 and running backs coach Tony Elliott $205,000. Strength coach Joey Batson will make $200,000.

The 18 people arrested, 15 of them students, were caught making “hand-to-hand” sales of marijuana, cocaine, ecstasy and prescription drugs to undercover officers, police said.

Brock was being held on $10,000 bond at the Mansfield Jail. Johnson and Horn were being transferred to the jail on Wednesday afternoon and Yendrey had not been arraigned.

Police said they had yet to determine if other football players were involved or would be charged.

The documents say that coach Gary Patterson sprung a surprise drug test on the football team on Feb. 1, National Signing Day, and that Brock later told an undercover officer that there “would be about 60 people being screwed” as a result of the test. Sources said Patterson ordered the drug test after a prize recruit told him that he would not attend TCU because of drug use by players.

During a drug buy, an undercover officer asked Johnson about the surprise drug test.

“What can they do? Eighty-two people failed it,” Johnson said.

Georgia’s Commings suspended

Georgia cornerback Sanders Commings has received a two-game suspension following his arrest on a domestic violence charge.

One of 10 defensive starters returning for the Bulldogs next season, Commings will miss the Sept. 1 opener against Buffalo in Athens and the first SEC game the following week, when Georgia hits the road to face league newcomer Missouri.

Aggies complete schedule

Texas A&M has completed its 2012 football schedule by adding football championship subdivision team Sam Houston State.

The Aggies will play the Bearkats, who reached the FCS national championship game in 2011, on Nov. 17 at home.

Texas A&M, which is moving from the Big 12 to the Southeastern Conference next season, added Louisiana Tech and South Carolina State.
