Timberwolves, Vikings score upset wins in 4A

Published: February 16, 2012

As expected, Midlands boys basketball top seeds Irmo, Lexington, Richland Northeast, Keenan and Eau Claire secured first round wins in the Class 4A and 2A state playoffs on Wednesday.

Road wins in 4A by White Knoll and Spring Valley were the big surprise of the night.

White Knoll dealt Region 8 champion Summerville a stunning 64-42 loss. Emarius Logan led the Timberwolves (14-13) with 19 points and had double-digit backing from Julian Johnson (14 points) and Keith Jumper. Trevor Bradley chipped in eight point to the cause. The WK defensive focus was on Summerville all-state guard J.D. Tucker, who finished with just two points.

The Timberwolves, who need a late run to finish in a tie for fourth place in Region 5 and then prevail in a play-in game just to earn a state invitation, has a Saturday second-round rematch at South Florence.

Spring Valley (13-11) whipped Region 6 champion Carolina Forest 74-59, and advances to the second round on Saturday at Aiken. The Vikings and Green Hornets split two non-region contests in early December. SV was a 68-47 winner on Dec. 1, and Aiken returned the favor, 62-58, on Dec. 8.
