Lexington falls in Long's last game as coach

Published: February 18, 2012

Lexington’s season and coach David Long tenure as Wildcats girls basketball coach came to an end on Friday night with a 32-25 loss to the two-time defending Lower State champion Goose Creek Gators.

The Wildcats were within four points of the host Gators entering the fourth quarter, but that was as close as it would get. Erin Munn and Janai Pinckney shared Lexington scoring honors with seven points apiece.

Long recently accepted a job with the Charleston County School District and is moving to the Lowcountry, but he agreed to finish the season as the Wildcats coach. In 10 seasons on the job, Long’s teams went 154-85, won one region championship, finished second five times and made the state playoff cut seven times. He was named region coach of the year four times

Perhaps his most memorable win came in his first season at Orangeburg-Wilkinson, ending a 53-game home winning streak by the Bruins.

Lexington closed the 2011-12 season with a 15-11 record.
