Columbia, Keenan girls to meet again

Published: February 22, 2012

As Columbia girls basketball coach Bobby Young predicted two weeks ago, his Capitals and city rival Keenan will have a Class 2A Upper State championship rematch in Greenville.

The Raiders pulled off a 31-26 upset win a year ago at the Bi-Lo Center to advance to the state championship game after losing both outings against Columbia during the Region 3 campaign. The Caps swept the Raiders again on the way to a conference title, and hope to avoid a similar fate in Greenville.

Both Midlands teams advanced with tough road wins.

Columbia (21-4) beat Cheraw 37-32 as Dorothy Brown rang up a game-high 14 points.

Keenan (14-10) put the defensive clamps on Palmetto, allowing the host Mustangs just three points in the fourth quarter (scoreless in the final four minutes) on the way to a 37-29 triumph. Keira Robinson led the Raiders with 14 points, and the sophomore came up big in the fourth quarter. Robinson had six points down the stretch and her steal and assist to set up a score by Jada Reeves that put Keenan ahead for good, 29-28, with 4:22 to go.
