A House subcommittee has approved a 2 percent pay raise for state workers that will cost taxpayers $28 million.

But it’s not all good news for state workers. They will have to pay 4.6 percent more for their health insurance. And lawmakers are considering a separate bill that would require state workers pay 1 percent more toward their retirement.

Meanwhile, another House subcommittee approved another $152 million to education funding, bring the base student cost to $2,012 per student. Nearly all of that money is dedicated to teacher salaries. Lawmakers will consider a budget proviso later today that would give a 2 percent pay increase to all school district employees.

The proposals now goes to the full House Ways and Means committee, which is expected to vote on them later today.

The pay increase would be another win for school district employees this budget cycle. Tuesday, lawmakers approved a budget proviso that bans school districts from furloughing employees next school year -- unless the state makes midyear budget cuts.
