SCHOOLS

THE BROOKLAND-CAYCE HIGH EDUCATION FOUNDATION will hold its Educator Hall of Fame Thursday at Seawell’s, 1125 Rosewood Drive. Social hour at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. 2012 inductees are Donna Wiles and the late Robbie Stevens. Tickets are $35; couples, $60; corporate tables for eight, $300. MIDLANDS STUDENTS were named state winners in the National Career Development Association’s 46th annual Poetry and Poster contest. Paige Ruder of Rocky Creek Elementary, won third place, Intermediate Division Poetry; Ainsley Smith, of Blythewood Middle, won third place Middle Division Poetry; Natalie Palumbo, of Lexington Technology Center, placed first in Senior Division Poster Category 2; Morgan Cato, of Lexington Technology Center, won second place, Senior Division Poster Category 2.

LEXINGTON 1 SCHOOLS received $1,000 grants from the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control. Lara Mathis wrote the grant from Gilbert High and Jennifer Gillespie wrote the grant from White Knoll Elementary.

JUDY WHITESELL AND MATTHEW SCHNABEL were awarded grants from PalmettoPride. Whitesell, of Gilbert Elementary, received $500 to support the Carolina Fence Garden. Schnabel, of White Knoll High, used his $1,400 to purchase recycling containers.

RICHLAND 2 STUDENTS have been named candidates for the 2012 Presidential Scholars Program: Afia Khan, Spring Valley High; Davis Borucki, Richland Northeast High; and Katherine Hafner, Ridge View High.

LEXINGTON 1’S INSTRUCTIONAL SERVICES OFFICE received a $32,000 Education and Economic Development Act At-Risk Student Supplemental Formula Grant for intensive intervention support activities at Lexington 1 high schools.

COMMUNITY

BOB WILLIAMS won first place, Plant/Landscape in the 2011 Audubon South Carolina Nature Photography contest. Sparkle Clark won second place, Wildlife; Joanna Wuori won third place, Wildlife; and Ron Wright won third place, Plant/Landscape. Dr. Mark Hoyle won the “Best in Show” award.

MILITARY

AIR FORCE AIRMAN 1st CLASS ADAM K. STANDLEY graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. The son of Kenneth and Bonnie Standley of Columbia, he is a graduate of Greenwood High and Clemson University.

AIR FORCE AIRMAN RAY O. JOSEPH JR. graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. The son of Latoya and Ray Joseph of Hopkins, he is a 2011 graduate of Lower Richland High.
