A Lexington County teen has been arrested after his friend was shot with an antique Russian rifle.

Brady Xavier Olson, 17, of Lexington, was arrested Sunday and charged with involuntary manslaughter after he admitted to accidentally shooting his friend, 19-year-old Kenneth Robert Nay, at a residence, according to an arrest warrant. He was being held Monday at the Lexington County Detention Center. Lexington County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Maj. John Allard said that the two were close friends.

“It doesn’t appear to be an intentional act,” Allard said.

Lexington County Deputies responded to the home in the 500 block of Riglaw Circle about 8:15 p.m. Sunday and found Olson standing outside on the driveway. He reportedly told them, “I just shot my friend.” Nay was found lying in a pool of blood inside the home with an apparent gunshot wound to the face. The reporting deputy saw a 7.62 mm Mosin-Nagant bolt-action rifle leaning against furniture in the room. There was another young man at the home at the time of the incident, Allard said.

Warrants say Olson pointed the gun in Nay’s direction while checking to see if the gun was loaded. He pulled the trigger, the warrant says, and the gun fired. Allard said he didn’t know of any prior criminal charges against Brady.

Mosin-Nagant rifles were developed in the late 1800s in Russia. They were used in the Soviet Revolution of 1917 and were standard-issue arms for Soviet soldiers during Wold War II.
