SCHOOLS

Cardinal Newman School hosts the lecture “Why Catholic Schools Matter,” 7 p.m. Wednesday, free.

White Knoll High School presents “Grease,” 7 p.m. April 5, Lexington 1 Performing Arts Center. $10, adults; $5, students; five and under, free.

Dent Middle School’s MathCounts team won the South Carolina MathCounts Championship for the fourth consecutive year. Coached by Cathy Stinson, team members are Vinita Cheepurupalli, Jenning Chen, Albert Huang and Priscilla Li. Anson Bidwell and Brennan Ravan also qualified for the state competition.

Spring Valley High School senior Rachel Smith received the Congressional Medal Silver Award by Congressman James Clyburn.

COMMUNITY

Deputy Michael Gooding of the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department was promoted to property crimes investigator in the North Region Patrol District, which is based near Irmo.

Correctional Officers James Davenport Jr. and Monica Randall, both of the Lexington County Detention Center graduated from the Section 287(g) Immigration Authority Delegation Program training class.

MILITARY

Marine Corps Pfc. Arvin P. Vinluan recently graduated from the Marine Aviation Supply Specialist Course. Vinluan is the son of Victoria Payumo of Columbia.

Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Brandon D. Dustin recently deployed. Dustin is the son of Darlene Crough of Columbia.

Air Force Airman 1st Class Sierra L. Cunningham graduated from basic military training. Cunningham is a graduate of Richland Northeast High School.

Fireman Apprentice Braden Reese recently graduated from United States Coast Guard boot camp. Reese is the son of Charmy and Bill Medlin of Columbia and Michael and Teresa Reese of Lexington.
