Over the years, former South Carolina star Terry Dozier has been involved in the development of several area basketball players and programs.
Now, Dozier has been charged with developing the program at the new Westwood High, where the Redhawks will compete in Class 3A for their inaugural season. Richland District Twos Board of Trustees formalized Doziers hiring as the first basketball coach at the school, which opens this summer. Doziers position at Westwood includes duties as College Information Specialist, helping prepare student-athletes for college and careers.
The Baltimore, Md., native Dozier and twin brother Perry Dozier played for the Gamecocks from 1985-89. Terry Dozier received a bachelors degree in Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism administration and went on to play 12 years overseas and in the NBA, including time with the Charlotte Hornets.
God has perfect timing, Ive been on the sidelines for a long time, watching other people coach and doing my part for some training, Dozier said. Over the past year or two Ive had several parents of players ask me why I dont coach. It was a long time coming, and the opportunity came when I was looking for the chance to coach.
Dozier, who was a principal trainer for niece and Spring Valley Vikings star Asia Dozier since her youth, is the father of three girls: Kacey, Terinee, and Kelcey, who along with Asia Dozier, played four years for Spring Valley.
Terry Doziers new position may establish a natural intra-district rivalry Perry Dozier is the boys basketball coach at Spring Valley.
Hes got a lot of catching up to do, but he swears he can out-coach me anyway, that he does believe, Perry Dozier said.
