Spring Valley High School AFJROTC won the first Irmo Invitational Drill Meet and was awarded the “Stinger” Championship Trophy.
The CrossRoads Middle School Honor Band earned a Superior rating and First Place Gold in the middle school division in the OrlandoFest Music Festival.
Darrell Barringer, Carolina Springs Elementary School principal, announced plans to retire and begin a second career as the State Director for AdvancED (SACS).
Hammond School won the South Carolina Independent School Association Middle School Quiz Bowl. Team members included Malik Bennett, William Harwood, Charlie Locke, Carlyle Rickenmann and Amelia Green.
COMMUNITY
Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts promoted Kevin Blackmon to the rank of lieutenant, Stephan Blair was promoted serve as a law enforcement correctional officer at the Lexington County Detention Center and Daniel Glendinning was promoted to serve as a master deputy .
YOUTH
Fate Young, a student at Kelly Mill Middle School, won the school’s science fair leading him to first place in Environmental Science Junior Division at the 56th annual USC Regional II Science and Engineering Fair.
Batesburg-Leesville High School Seniors competed in the Health Occupations Students of America State Leadership Conference. Cari Rivers placed first in the Pharmacology event, and Ida Stewart placed in the top 5 in Extemporaneous Speaking event.
Travain Smalls of Columbia was named the winner in the Art Institute of Charlotte’s Passion for Fashion Competition 2012.
MILITARY
AIR FORCE AIRMAN JEFFREY K. HALTIWANGER has completed basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. The son of Dawn and Jeff Haltiwanger of Blythewood, he is a 2009 graduate of Blythewood High School.
AIR FORCE AIRMAN KEVIN D. DOMINICK has completed basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio. The son of James Dominick of Columbia, he is a graduate of Irmo High School and Midlands Technical College.
AIR FORCE AIRMAN ANDREW D. SCHOONOVER has completed basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio. The son of Bob Schoonover of Irmo and Laura Green of Swansea, he is a 2009 graduate of Dutch Fork High School.
