Lexington moves on to Lower State tournament

May 3, 2012

Top-ranked Lexington blanked James Island 2-0 on Wednesday at Wildcats Field to wrap-up a perfect, 3-0 title run in the Class 4A District V playoffs.

The Wildcats (25-2) move on to Lower State tournament and a first-round road date with Region 5 rival South Aiken on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. It is sixth trip to the Elite Eight for the Wildcats in 10 tries since 4A adopted the current playoff format in 2003.

Lexington banged out nine hits on the way to its 14th straight win, but only Collin Steagall’s two-out double in the first and Tony Ciuffo’s one-out single in the fifth produced runs. Steagall capped a monster district show with a 3-for-3 game and was 7-for-9 with one run and four RBI in the three games. Ciuffo (4-for-7, 1 R, 4 RBI, 1 HR) and leadoff man Colie Bowers (4-for-9, 3 R) make big contributions, as well.

Cole McMillan and Nick Jobst combined on a five-hit shutout performance on the hill. McMillan went 4.2 innings to pick up the win and up his season record to 6-0. Jobst worked the final 2.1 innings to pick up his first save, allowing just one hits and no runs.

Lexington’s staff pitching performance in the district tournament was stellar – allowed just two earned runs in 19 innings, good for a 0.74 ERA.
