Chapin rallies to win District V softball championship

May 3, 2012

Chapin needed two games, but got the job done in the Class 3A District V district softball final round on Wednesday night to advance to the Lower State tournament for the third time in the last four years.

Region 5 rival Midland Valley, which had lost all three previous meetings with the Eagles, shocked the hosts with a 7-0 win to forced a decisive second game. Chapin managed only two hits in the opener. The Eagles, however, responded with a 7-0 win themselves in the nightcap to move on to the Elite Eight and a first-round game at Georgetown.

Savannah Frick jump-started the Chapin offense with a two-run homer to center field in the bottom of the fourth inning of the second game after Whitley Martin led off the frame with a sharp single to left. The Eagles then put it away with a five-run burst in the fifth, featuring consecutive hits by Brooke Burns, Natalie Harper, Addy Schelble, Martin, Taylor Morgan and Lindsay Harris.

Morgan allowed two runs in five innings of work in the first game before coach Jason Jolley pulled his ace with the idea of keeping her somewhat rested for a potential second game. He ploy worked. The senior right-hander dominated the Mustangs this time, firing a two-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts.

With the win, Chapin improved to 24-4.
