Gilbert secures another district softball title

Correction: This story has been updated to show that Gilbert pitcher Lyndie Dorgan's record is 14-0. We regret the error.

Gilbert completed a three-game sweep in the Class 2A District III playoffs on Wednesday, downing Emerald 6-0 in the championship advance to the Upper State tournament for the third time in the last four seasons.

The Indians (23-4) open the Elite Eight portion of the postseason on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Palmetto. Reuben Eargle’s team had won 12 in a row, 17 of its last 18 games with the lone stumble in the run to 4A power White Knoll at the Triple Crown tournament in Aiken.

Lyndie Dorgan went the distance to up her record in the circle to 14-0, but it was not easy. The Vikings had plenty of runners on base thanks to six hits, one walk and two hit batsmen, but Dorgan was tough when needed. That was never more evident than in the sixth inning when she emerge unscathed from a bases-loaded, no-out jam – getting the last two outs via strikeout.

The offensive highlight was a three-run home run by Caitlyn Sheppard.
