SCHOOLS

CARDINAL NEWMAN placed fourth overall for the South Carolina Junior Classical League 2012 Spring Forum. Individual winners placing first and second were Clayton Segars, Micaela Wendell and Noah Zimmerman, academic testing; and Alex Jones, Mary Pickler and Micaela Wendell, art.

DENT MIDDLE SCHOOL was named a Mix It Up Model School for the 2011-2012 school year by the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Teching Tolerance program.

RIDGE VIEW HIGH SCHOOL DECA students Jeremy Jones, Cole Dickerson and Andrew Cooper won honors in the international competition Dollars and Sense Challenge, which is sponsored by H&R Block.

LEXINGTON SCHOOL DISTRICT ONE approved the promotion of Gloria B. Nester as assistant administrator at Lexington Middle School and the transfer of Mark E. McDermet to assistant principal at Forts Pond Elementary School.

COMMUNITY

FORT JACKSON was one of four recipients recognized for its participation in the South Carolina Smart Business Recycling program, which is sponsored by DHEC.

LEXINGTON COUNTY Sheriff James R. Metts honored Lexington County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Garry Rozier as the agency’s Employee of the Quarter for the first quarter of 2012. Field Training Officer Brandon Miller was presented the Sheriff’s Gold Star Award, and Joy Smiley was named the Sheriff’s Department Civilian Employee of the Quarter for the second quarter of 2012.

MILITARY

ARMY NATIONAL GUARD PVT. AUSTIN R. SMITH has completed basic combat training at Fort Jackson. He is a 2006 graduate of Swansea High School.

ARMY NATIONAL GUARD PVT. HUNTER P. HITE has completed One Station Unit Training at Fort Leonard Wood, Waynesville, Mo. OSUT includes basic military training and advanced individual training. During AIT, the soldier completed the military police specialist course. The son of Kelly D. Hite of Little Mountain and Rhonda R. Hite of Chapin, he is a 2010 graduate of Chapin High School.

AIR FORCE AIRMAN ADAM S. McJUNKIN has completed basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. The son of Donna McJunkin of Irmo, he is a 2009 graduate of Dutch Fork High School.
