Innovista gets final funding

With some reservations from Gov. Nikki Haley, the State Budget and Control Board approved the final payout Wednesday to finish work on main buildings at the Innovista, the University of South Carolina's research campus.

The $13 million in bonds will complete work on two floors of the Horizon building. Final work is being completed on the Discovery building.

Plans for two buildings for private companies have been on hold.

Haley started the discussion over the bonds by saying: "With all due respect, what a mess."

Rick Kelly, USC's retired chief financial officer who is still helping shepherd the project, told the board that the Innovista has made some strides through a tough economy -- citing rising research grants, interest from researchers and new technology-related jobs at locations off campus.

The board agreed to the funding even though Haley said, "It seems like we're throwing good money after bad."
