SCHOOLS
RICHLAND 2 has been recognized with three school-level and 13 district-level awards for its outstanding communications and public relations efforts by the South Carolina chapter of the National School Public Relations Association.
RICHLAND 1 SCHOOLS have won 45 HealthierUS School Challenge Awards from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Department of Education. The award was established to recognize schools that create healthier school environments through good nutrition and physical activity.
WHITE KNOLL HIGH SCHOOL members of the cast of “Snappy’s Happy Half Hour” have won the Best Use of Set award at the Palmetto Dramatic Association and South Carolina International Thespian Society Secondary School Festival.
DREHER HIGH SCHOOL boy’s track team won the Class 3A State Track Championship. Dreher athletes also won the 4x100 relay, the 4x400 relay, the 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dash.
COMMUNITY
FRANK STOVER has won the Special Service Award for his dedication to teach students about agriculture, horticulture and livestock. Stover is the agriculture department chair at Pelion High School.
MATT SCHNABEL has won the Lexington Conservation District’s 2012 Teacher of the Year Award. Schnabel is a teacher at White Knoll High School.
LEESA BENGGIO AND PAULA JAMES have completed the Certified Public Manager Program, which is for managers and supervisors in South Carolina state government. Benggio is the deputy director of the South Carolina State Library, and James is the finance director.
ROBBIE DERRICK has won the Conservation Achievement Award for his dedicated service to Lexington County citizens and his support of the programs of the Conservation District’s educational activities. Derrick is the Lexington County landscape administrator.
YOUTH
THE SOUTHERN GUITAR FESTIVAL AND COMPETITION WINNERS have been announced. Winners in the elementary division were Crawford Latham, first place; Ethan Speer, second place; and Isaiah Thompson, third place. High school and middle school division winners were Kevin DeMiranda, first place; and Lillian Aluri, second place. College and professional division winners were Artyom Dervoed, first place; Joel Sharbaugh, second place; Fernando Troche, third place; and Laura Boswell, honorable mention.
MORGAN FINLEY has won the SkillsUSA 2012 National Pin Design Competition. Finley is a digital art and design student at Lexington Technology Center.
MILITARY
MARINE PVT. LINA D. OLIVA completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island. She is the daughter of Melissa M. Sanchez of Dalzell and Juan Oliva of Columbia.
DOMINIQUE E. LOCKFIELD enlisted in the Navy. A 2009 graduate of Newberry High School, he is the son of Betty L. Jackson of Florence and Herman E. Lockfield of Newberry.
SPARKLE B. NORMAN enlisted in the Navy. She is the daughter of Sonia Norman of Columbia.
ZANOBIA L. MCCRIMON enlisted in the Navy. She is the daughter of Katia S. McCrimon of Columbia and Wilbert C. McCrimon of Winnsboro.
DANIEL A. IBARRA completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island. He is the son of Lucia and Antonio Ibarra of Pelion.
