Former South Carolina standout and Newberry athletics director Brad Edwards will be named athletics director at Jacksonville University today, a source told The State.

The Florida Times-Union also reported the hire, and the school’s website announced a press conference for 10 a.m. today to announce a new hire. A message left on Edwards’ cell phone was not immediately returned Tuesday evening.

Edwards, a nine-year NFL veteran, was assistant athletics director and associate athletics director at South Carolina from 1999-2006. In 2009, he became athletics director at Newberry College.

Edwards was named All-South Independent in 1987 and was selected in the second round of the NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings. He also played for Washington and Atlanta.

Jacksonville’s football team, which plays in the Pioneer Football League, is coached by former Florida quarterback Kerwin Bell.
