SCHOOLS
BARON DEKALB ELEMENTARY has earned the prestigious Exemplary Writing Program Award, which is sponsored by the South Carolina Department of Education and governed by the Writing Improvement Coordinating Council.
WHITE KNOLL HIGH SCHOOL science teacher Matt Schnabel has been named the Lexington County Soil and Water Conservation Teacher of the Year. The award recognizes Schnabel’s accomplishments in conservation education inside and outside the classroom.
SPRING VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL math teacher Matthew Owens has won the prestigious Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. Owens teaches pre-calculus, AP calculus and other algebra classes.
THE WHITE KNOLL HIGH SCHOOL ORCHESTRA has won first place in the Orchestra String Division and the award for Outstanding Highest Overall Score at the Heritage Music Festival.
COMMUNITY
EUNIKA SIMONS has been named the 2012 Rotarian of the Year. Simons was chosen for demonstrating professional and civic endeavors and for celebrating service above self.
PFC. STEFFONIE COCKERILL has been awarded the distinguished honor of Nathan M. Wolfe Cadet Academy Instructor of the Year. Cockerill has been with the Lexington Police Department eight and a half years.
NANCY STUCKEY has been named the 2011-2012 Richland 2 Substitute Teacher of the Year. Stuckey is a retired special education teacher.
JANE LUTHER SMITH performed at the Fourth World Piano Conference, which was held at the Isidor Bajic Music School in Novi Sad, Serbia. Smith is a USC Sumter music professor and concert pianist.
YOUTH
GILBERT HIGH FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA MEMBERS Rodney Barnes, William Black, Courtlyn Myers and Caleb Taylor have won second place during the S.C. Forestry Career Development Event. The team is coached by Derrick Cooper.
NICHOLAS WROBEL has achieved the rank and distinction of Eagle Scout. Wrobel achieved this rank through a service project, which included replacing an outdated boardwalk at Goodale State Park.
TIERRA SMALL was selected to attend the South Carolina Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Seminar. Small is a student at White Knoll High School and is the daughter of Ryan and Sharon Small of Lexington.
TAYLOR JOYCE TILL has been selected South Carolina’s Homecoming Queen. Taylor is the daughter of Erik and Anna Miller of Chapin and Jeff and Whitney Till of Orangeburg.
MILITARY
NAVY SEAMAN CALVIN L. VAUGHAN has completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. A graduate of Brookland Cayce High School, he is the son of Pamela Vaughan of West Columbia.
ARMY SPEC. DOMINICK D. MULLINS has completed basic combat training at Fort Jackson. A graduate of Lower Richland High School, he is the son of Arlene Mullins of Hopkins.
MARINE CORPS PFC. WARREN H. BROWN has completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island. He is the son of Allen N. Brown of Columbia.
NAVY SEAMAN RECRUIT ISAAC A. SOBLO has completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. A graduate of Spring Valley High School, he is the son of Barbara A. and Dale C. Soblo of Columbia.
NAVY SEAMAN RECRUIT RICHARD L. ANDERSON has completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. He is a 2005 graduate of Dreher High School.
