The Richland County Recreation Center has asked County Council to approve a change in the emphasis of its Kelly Mill Road Park from soccer to baseball.
One of the requirements of the $50 million construction bond approved by County Council in 2008 was that the recreation agency has to seek approval of any major changes. After County Council recently voted to build its own 18-field soccer complex at Hard Scrabble and Farrow roads, the recreation agency decided to shift the focus to baseball at its new Kelly Mill Road Park, said Kenya Bryant, assistant director of the recreation agency.
The change in plans calls for a main area with four lighted baseball fields with press box, canteen and restrooms. Other athletics fields (football, soccer or baseball/softball) also will be included in the $5.9 million park, but those will have fewer amenities. The park also will feature picnic shelters, a playground system and a walking trail.
