RICHLAND 2 kindergartners at Forest Lake, Polo Road and Conder elementary schools will start the year off right thanks to the National Foundation for Women Legislators and the Office Depot Foundation. Three hundred new book bags containing pencils, erasers, crayons and rulers were given to Rep. Joan Brady for students in her legislative district.

THE FIREHOUSE SUBS SAFETY FOUNDATION donated equipment valued at $6,000 to the Irmo Fire District on July 31. The department received two MSA Altair 5 air monitors, an Altair 5 Galaxy calibration system, an HCN calibration gas and a mixed calibration gas. The equipment will assure firefighters are breathing safe air and will assist with detection of deadly gases.

FOOD DRIVE for Harvest Hope Food Bank is being held through Aug. 14 at the State Library, 1500 Senate St. Visitors to the library are encouraged to bring the following items: canned meat or fish, peanut butter, canned fruit and vegetables, pasta, cereal, dried beans, rice, personal care items, disposable diapers, detergent, plastic and paper bags. The drive is sponsored by the State Library and the S.C. Society of Certified Public Managers.

FOOD FOR THE SOUL, a ministry that provides meals to the hungry and temporary emergency shelter and services for the homeless in Kershaw County, is in need of the following items: paper towels, hand sanitizer, liquid antibacterial hand soap, men’s and women’s deodorants, liquid laundry detergent and bleach, disposable plates (101/2-inch) and disposable cups (12-oz.). PALMETTO HEALTH CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL is in need of stuffed animals for its pediatric patients. The animals will be given to patients and later taken home with the children.
