An 18-year-old Irmo area youth drowned after slipping off a float during a church group outing at a home on Amenity Island on Lake Murray, officials said Monday.
Christopher Riddle was about 20 feet from a dock when he went under water, Richland County coroner Gary Watts said.
Riddle could swim but “his proficiency was not the best,” Watts said, adding the victim was not wearing a life jacket.
It isn’t clear why Riddle slipped off the circular float, he said.
Others at the outing tried to find him in the murky water but couldn’t, officials said.
His body was recovered by divers from the Richland County Sheriff’s Department about 7:30 p.m. after a two-hour search, officials said.
There was no lifeguard at the event attended by about 25 teens associated with Trenholm Road United Methodist Church, sheriff’s spokesman Curtis Wilson said Monday.
The church is in the Heathwood neighborhood in Columbia.
