Rantin: Local Meals on Wheels volunteer finishes second in national volunteer recognition contest

Published: August 28, 2012

Midlands residents recently logged their votes for area seniors in a big way.

Senior Resources volunteer Mike Sullivan finished second nationally in the Meals On Wheels Association of America’s 2012 American Volunteer contest on Facebook.

Sullivan’s finish earned Senior Resources $750 for its signature Meals on Wheels program, which provided more than 100,000 meals for seniors in 2011 with the help of volunteers.

“We are so thankful to the community for voting and making Mike the first runner-up in the American Volunteer contest,” said Annie Eveleigh of Senior Resources. “His faithful service to our seniors makes him a winner every day at Senior Resources.”

Sullivan, who delivers 22 meals to area seniors three times a week, was among 25 volunteers in the nationwide competition. He became the second Midlands volunteer to finish second in the event.

Senior Resources has been meeting the nutritional needs of Midlands seniors through its Meals On Wheels home delivery program, frozen meal program and wellness center program for more than 30 years. Meals On Wheels depends on money raised through donations and on volunteers to deliver meals to the community’s homebound seniors.

“We have the best volunteers ever,” Eveleigh said, adding the agency is in need of more volunteers.

Kershaw County residents age 65 and older can get free lifetime Golden Circle passes to attend school-sponsored activities or athletics events in the county.

“We always encourage family participation for school events, and this makes it easier for grandparents to attend activities without worrying about the cost,” Superintendent Frank Morgan said. “We want these persons to feel welcome at our schools so it is truly a win-win situation.”

The passes must be renewed each year and do not include playoff games.

Golden Circle passes are available at all three high schools – Camden, Lugoff-Elgin and North Central. Those interested should contact the office at each school for more info:

•  Lugoff-Elgin High, (803) 438-3481
