7 tonight: Chuck Brodsky at Unitarian Universalist Coffeehouse. Chuck Brodsky, known for his folksy demeanor and storytelling, will be familiar to UU regulars who know that he always puts on an entertaining show. What gets us excited about this concert, the first of the UU’s 19th season, is that The Mobros will open — and that there’s an open mic before the show. The Mobros, in the UU’s listening-room like setting, will barrel some folks over with their bluesy and rhythmic cool. If you want to participate in the open mic, call to schedule your spot. The coffeehouse is at 2701 Heyward St. $5-$15; (803) 200-2824
8 tonight: Faun Fables at Conundrum Music Hall. Faun Fables, the band led by the theatrical Dawn McCarthy, trades in arrangements that splice ethereal vocals, instrumentation and presentation into an at-times haunting sound. Faun Fables, which performed here in May, is a compelling draw. With Jackaroe and The Good Witch. Conundrum is at 626 Meeting St. $10; www.conundrum.us or (803) 250-1295
9 tonight: The Casual Kings at 5 Points Pub. The Casual Kings, a high-energy band that combines head-nodding rock riffs with head-nodding, almost-rapped lyrics, announced it was playing its last show on New Year’s Eve 2011. According to the band’s Facebook page, the quartet — Rhett Sanders, Mike Atwater, Mike Mills and Collin Danker — played a private gig in July. This is being billed as a reunion show. Perhaps there are more shows in the band’s future. Because of an injury, Danker won’t be playing tonight. Of course Larry “1-800-drummer-for-hire” Gornto, the most chameleonic musician on the scene, will play with TCK. Was there any doubt? With Finding Solace, Postcard Fiction and Don Russo. The pub is at 2020 Devine St. $6; www.the5pointspub.com
8 p.m. Saturday: Akil the MC at One Unit Art Space. Akil the MC was a member of Jurassic 5, an alt-hip-hop crew that was a leader of the so-called backpacker movement in hip-hop in the late ’90s and early ’00s. With Ghani Gautama, Quanstar, and Crocker. The event, which will also feature the work of visual artist Cedric Umoja, is being hosted by Trublklef. The space is at 810 South Edisto Ave. $8; http://www.facebook.com/OneUnitArtSpace
9 p.m. Saturday: The Unawares at Art Bar. The Unawares, the rollicking rock trio with foot-stomping soul, are the headliners. The Fishing Journal, the indie-punk band fronted by Chris Powell, has some news: Guitarist Chuck Sligh, formerly of Tunguska and currently a member of Burnt Books, has replaced Reno Gooch on bass. One can hear the difference in demos of the band’s new EP “Ditch,” which is slated for a fall release. With People Person and The Weekenders. Art Bar is at 1211 Park St.; (803) 929-0198
9 p.m. Saturday: Come Original at 5 Points Pub. Come Original is a 311 tribute band comprised of members of The Casual Kings, Funky Junk, and Lefty at the Washout. While understanding that “Come Original” is a title of a song by 311, one of the few commercial bands to not make the rap-reggae-rock hybrid sound wholly ridiculous, it seems like Come Original is a clumsy name for a tribute band. Unless you get the inside joke. Mike Mills will be rapping, so that is a reason to see the show alone. $6
7:30 p.m. Sunday: Don Williams at Township Auditorium. Don Williams, nicknamed The Gentle Giant, is a 2010 Country Music Hal of Fame inductee. He’s had more than 50 country top 40 hits, with almost 20 making it to No. 1. His songs have been covered by legacy singers such as Johnny Cash, Eric Clapton and Kenny Rogers, as well as by contemporary performers such as Alison Krauss, Tortoise, Bonnie “Prince” Billy and South Carolina native Josh Turner. The Township is at 1703 Taylor St. $35-$55; www.thetownship.org
6 p.m. Thursday: Loading Dock Live at Township Auditorium. The free outdoor concert will be held on the loading dock behind the auditorium. Danielle Howle + Firework Show will perform, as will Finnegan Bell, a band featuring former members of Silars Bald. There will be food trucks at the event, so don’t worry about where you’re going to get an after-work snack.
9 p.m. Thursday: Archnemesis at 5 Points Pub. Almost about a month ago, Archnemesis, an EDM duo, performed at the Famously Hot Music Festival. Sadly, we’ll venture to say that there will be more people at the Pub than there were in Finlay Park at the time Archnemesis played at the festival. With Futexture. $8 in advance, $10 at the door
