SCHOOLS

CALHOUN COUNTY SCHOOLS have received an overall “A” rating, and Calhoun County School Superintendent Steve Wilson has received the Excellence in Education award.

LEXINGTON 1 board member Debra Knight has earned recognition from the South Carolina School Boards Association for achievement in the association’s 2011-2012 Boardsmanship Institute.

RICHLAND 2 board members have earned recognition by the South Carolina School Boards Association. Board Chairman Calvin Jackson has reached Level Four by earing 200 points within four consecutive years or less, and Board Secretary James Manning has reached Level Three by earning 100 points within two consecutive years or less.

THE LEXINGTON 1 COMMUNICATIONS OFFICE has received a 2012 National School Public Relations Association Golden Achievement award. Chief Communications Officer Mary Beth Hill and her team earned the award for the “Leading As One” campaign.

COMMUNITY

TERRY HUFSTETLER has received the 2012 National Shining Star Award from the National Challenger Center for Space Science Education. Hufstetler is a mission commander at Richland 1’s Challenger Learning Center.

ERIN R. GILREATH has been named a finalist in the eighth annual South Carolina Spanish Teacher of the Year program. Gilreath is a teacher at Dutch Fork High School.

THE LEXINGTON COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT has promoted five officers. Garry Rozier has been promoted to the rank of lieutenant, James Kemfort has been promoted to the rank of master deputy, Jonaire McClary will serve as a school resource officers at Pelion Middle School, Renee Strickland will serve as an investigator in the Major Crimes unit and Travis Truesdale will serve as a field training officer at the county Detention Center.

LEXINGTON COUNTY hosts the third annual Spare the Air Calendar Contest, which is open to Lexington County public, private and home school students in fifth-seventh grade. The deadline to enter is Nov. 2. (803) 785-8634

MILITARY

MARINE CORPS PFC. JOHNNIE L. JOHNSON has graduated from the Marine Aviation Supply Specialist Course with Marine Aviation Training Support Squadron One, Marine Aviation Support Training Support Group 21. Johnson is the son of Kishia Jackson of Blythewood.

AIR FORCE AIRMAN DOMANIC D. RILEY has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. Riley is the son of Nancy Riley and the grandson of Earline Riley, both of Columbia.

AIR FORCE AIRMAN COLEMAN R. JOHNSON has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. Johnson is the son of William Johnson of Blythewood and the grandson of Betty Johnson of Loris.

ARMY PVT. AUNTONIO S. HAYNES has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson. Haynes is the son of Julia Bush and Ace Haynes, both of Columbia.

MARINE CORPS PVT. SHAWN M. DAY has graduated from recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island. Day is the son of DeSiree K. Day and Jimmie R. Day, both of Columbia.
